A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL OF NURSING,CHRISTIAN HOSTPITAL,
BERHAMPUR AND ITS FUTURE.

It is very fortunate that the Christian Hospital, Berhampur, has had a training programme for nurses for more than a century – since 1907 and the School of Nursing continue to be one of the strongest pillars of the Hospital.

Miss. Standfard joined as the first Nursing Sister in 1906, who started training the local girls in basic nursing from 1907. Twelve years later, Miss.K.Halls joined the nursing staff, in 1918, and left in 1950, after serving for 32 years.

In 1926 the first junior set of nurses passed the Vernacular grade examination of the Christian Medical Association of India, and in 1927 the Final set of students passed their examination. Again from 1928 to 1930, the Final Midwifes passed the examination conducted by the South India Medical Missionary Association.    

Further landmarks in the history of the School of Nursing of the Christian Hospital, Berhampur, was its recognition by the Bihar Orissa Medical Examination Board in 1938, and in 1943 by the Orissa Nurses Medical Examination Board. Later by the Indian Nursing Council and the Mid India Board of Examniation.

The minimum qualifications for admission into the School of Nursing, the Christian Hospital, Berhampur, were revised from time to time – Standard X pass in 1967, Matriculation pass in 1971, and in July 1994 Non-Oriya pre-degree aggregate of 50%. In July 1978, admission of students into School of Nursing done by an interview, in addition to minimum qualifying grades. Again in 1984 the minimum educational qualification for admission was revised to Intermediate passed, and in 1985, to 10 +2 passed.

In 1989, the syllabus for the course was revised, and the new General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course was introduced.

From 1999, the School is affiliated to the Mid India Board of Education of CMAI.

The numbers of Students admitted into the School of Nursing was, up to the year 1989, 6 to 8, admitted twice a year, a maximum of 16 students each year.  However, since 1990, 20 students are admitted into the School or Nursing, all at the same time, and now 30 students, as per the Indian Nursing Council guidelines.
